Clovis MainStreet and the UNM DPAC

Lyceum Theater

Can you name the three historic theaters in the Clovis MainStreet District? (We will tell you at the end of this post…)

Last Friday and Saturday Clovis MainStreet welcomed students and faculty from the University of New Mexico’s Design and Planning Assistance Center along with NM MainStreet staff to kick off a new project. The students toured the three historic theaters in the MainStreet District, met with the owners, and discussed the current uses and plans for the theaters. They had dinner a the Rock and Roll Museum (Thank you to the Chamber of Commerce and Taco Box!) to learn more about the music history of Clovis and visited with members of the Clovis MainStreet board about the vision and mission of the program for the MainStreet district.

They took lots of pictures, measurements and some more pictures before they climbed back on the bus to head back to Albuquerque.

Now the work begins. The students will spend the next couple of months dreaming big for the theaters. Creating ideas for preserving the integrity of the current design of the theaters and looking at potential uses and integration of the theaters into a “theater district.”

They will return in March to share their ideas with our community.

It was a great visit and we appreciate their partnering with us on the project … we are very excited to see their ideas in March for the Mesa Theater (owned by Clovis Community College), Lyceum Theater (owned by the City of Clovis) and the State Theater (privately owned).
